INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION PRACTICE: International Trade, Shipping, Commercial
In view of Singapore’s status as a word-class international alternative dispute resolution centre, our firm is at the forefront of international arbitration heard in Singapore or overseas (including the UK, India, China, Hong Kong, Australia, South America and the USA). The lawyers in the litigation and dispute resolution department regularly act as Counsel in arbitration matters in various areas of the law and also, when necessary, appoint and work with foreign Counsel.
Our arbitration lawyers are well versed to handle disputes in shipping and maritime, building and construction, banking, international trade of commodities, oil and gas, international joint ventures, mining and general civil and commercial matters. We represent multinational companies in disputes relating to hard and soft commodities, agricultural products, chemicals and equipment plants and products (in industries such as iron ore, coal, agro commodities and fertilisers), shipping, admiralty, commercial and corporate matters.
We have experience in both domestic and international arbitration, as well as arbitration governed by rules under various arbitral institutions such as SIAC, ICC, UNCITRAL, LMAA, LCIA, HKIAC, SCMA, GAFTA, RSA, FOSFA and GTA.
LITIGATION: Civil, Corporate & Commercial Litigation
Our lawyers regularly appear before the Singapore Courts (the Court of Appeal, High Court and State Courts) in various civil and corporate disputes. We are also instructed by foreign companies (including foreign law firms) for matters to be heard in the Singapore Courts and also, when necessary, instruct and work with solicitors and counsel in other jurisdictions for litigation to be conducted before foreign courts.
Our litigation practice includes applications involving challenges to arbitral awards on grounds of natural justice, public policy, conflict of laws as well as objection to jurisdiction, defamation suits, tort claims and various other construction, taxation, insolvency, infrastructure and employment matters.
Admiralty and Shipping Practice
Our Admiralty and Shipping practice is focused on all aspects of dry shipping work. Non-contentious work includes advice on and drafting of shipping documents (such as CPs, Fixture Notes, LOIs, shipping notices and communications) and advice on Charterparty agreements (Time and Voyage, Contracts of Affreightment). Our contentious shipping practice covers ship arrests, litigation and arbitration that spans the spectrum of maritime claims.
The Corporate practice comprises lawyers servicing local and international clients. The practice handles a comprehensive range of corporate matters across a wide spectrum of local and cross border transactions. Our lawyers are well versed in cross border transactions, joint ventures and other forms of corporate relationships, shareholders agreements, venture capital work, asset and business sales and purchases, incorporation of companies in Singapore, partnership work, employee share option schemes and general corporate work.
The Building and Construction practice of the firm comprises highly motivated lawyers. Our lawyers handle a wide range of contentious and non-contentious matters. In contentious matters, our lawyers handle disputes in respect of claims for payment, damages for delay, defective works, variation claims. An area of particular interest is representing our wide and varied client base in adjudication proceedings under the Building Construction Industry Security of Payment Act 2004. In non-contentious matters, our lawyers assist clients in their contract drafting for all types of construction matters.
Banking and Finance Practice
We regularly advise clients on areas of complex banking disputes on issues pertaining to letters of credit, loan and credit recovery and enforcement of securities.
We also advise on regulatory issues pertaining to guarantees and facilities and other commercial agreements.
Wills, Probate and Estate Administration
We represent clients in both contentious and non-contentious estate administration and probate matters. For non-contentious matters, we prioritise our clients’ interests and ensure that they are well informed of the various ways by which they are able to distribute their assets.
